Robert Kacmarek, PhD, RRT, FCCM, FCCP, FARC

Robert ”Bob” Kacmarek PhD, RRT, FAARC--- Bob has been an AARC member since 1967. He received his B.S. degree at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He received his Masters and PhD at Northwestern University also in Illinois. He became a CRT in 1971 and a RRT in 1973. He has been on over 40 professional memberships. From the 1970’s -1980’s he was a member of many committees on the Illinois Society of Respiratory Care. For close to 50 yrs. he has led the way in respiratory care education, management and research. He has trained hundreds of students the right way and became what is surely one of the most prolific and best known author of respiratory care articles and books over the past four decades, according to a former AARC fellow. For years he was on a Respiratory Advisory Committee for a homecare company. Since the 1980’s, 1990’s and some currently he has been on many hospital committees. He was an oral examiner for the NBRC and has been on over 10 committees for them. He has been an active member of the AARC, such as a delegate, bylaws committee, continuing education subcommittee to name a few. Bob has been a member of the American Heart Association, as a certified instructor trainer. He has been on the American College of Chest Physicians Committee. Bob has been on over 15 editorial boards which included the Respiratory Care Journal, The Respiratory Times, Critical Care Medicine, American Review of Respiratory Diseases, Intensive Care Medicine, The New England Journal of Medicine and the European Respiratory Journal…..just to name a few. Since 1988 he has been a member of the Respiratory Care Advisory Committee for Massasoit Community College. For 11 years, he was a member of the Respiratory Care Advisory Committee for Newbury College. He has received many awards and honors such as, the Inhalation Therapy Services Literary Award, Ohio Medical Research Award, Best Teacher Award from MGH. He has received College Medalist Award from the American College of Chest Physicians------to name a few. He is a fellow of the AARC, the American College of Chest Physicians and of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He has received over 10 grants. He has also received the Jimmy A. Young medal from the AARC for exemplary service to the AARC and advancement of the respiratory care profession (2008). Bob has written hundreds of publications and reviews relating to respiratory care. He has also written many books such as, The Essentials of Respiratory Care, Egan’s Fundamentals of Respiratory Care, Monitoring in Respiratory Care, Advanced Respiratory Care ……to name a few. Some of these were with Dr. Hess. Bob has done research in High Frequency Ventilation, pressure control recruitment maneuvers, partial liquid ventilation and NIPPV…..to name a few. He has lectured for the MSRC for years, always making himself available and has filled in for other speakers. Most recently he was a Professor of Anesthesiology, Harvard Medical School and the Director of Respiratory Care at MGH.
